Use the envelope you will actually line

  1. Open the flap fully.Measure the inside width across the body, then measure from the fold to the bottom edge.
  2. Measure the flap depth.Measure from the center of the fold to the flap tip. Do not rely only on the envelope size name.
  3. Choose visible margins.The side and top insets expose a narrow border of envelope paper and help the liner close without rubbing.
  4. Test one paper liner.Cut inexpensive paper first, place it below the gum line, close the flap, and adjust before using final stock.

How the template and sheet count are calculated

1. Create the cut width

The selected side inset is removed from both edges. This leaves a visible envelope border and reduces interference at the side seams.

2. Place the fold guide

The flap portion starts below the flap tip. The dashed guide marks where that portion meets the body at the envelope fold.

3. Fit complete pieces

The usable sheet excludes the outer margin. The calculator compares upright and rotated grids, then rounds the required sheet count up.

Envelope sizes are starting points, not guaranteed die lines

Envelope manufacturers can use different flap profiles, seams and gum placement for the same finished size. That is why this tool keeps every dimension editable and treats named presets as measurement shortcuts.

The generated outline is a planning and craft template. It is not a manufacturer-approved production die line.

Before cutting the final paper

  • Print or import at 100% scale. Disable “Fit,” “Shrink oversized pages,” or similar automatic scaling.
  • Check that the SVG dimensions shown by your cutting software match the calculator's cut size.
  • Keep the liner below the envelope's adhesive gum and away from thick side seams.
  • Make one test liner from ordinary paper, close the envelope, and refine the editable insets.
  • For patterned paper, confirm the artwork direction before arranging the full sheet.

Envelope liner template questions

Why does an A7 preset still need measuring?

A7 describes the finished envelope size, but flap curvature, flap depth, side seams and gum position can differ by brand or product line. Measure one envelope from the pack you will use.

What does the dashed line mean?

It is an alignment guide for the envelope fold, not a cut line. The solid teal outline is the cut path.

Can I use the SVG in Cricut Design Space or Silhouette Studio?

Yes, as a dimensioned starting file. Confirm the imported width and height before cutting because software import settings and machine workflows vary.

Why does the sheet fit show only one liner?

A full-height liner can be much taller than the envelope body because it also covers the flap. Try a larger craft sheet, reduce safe insets only after a paper test, or compare rotation.

Should the liner reach the bottom of the envelope?

It can, but a small bottom clearance is often easier to insert and less likely to catch on seams. The appropriate clearance depends on the envelope construction and paper thickness.
