Build the outside layout
1. Measure the closed book
Panel order in the outside artwork is back flap, back cover, spine, front cover, front flap. Measure with the book closed and do not assume the front board equals the text-block trim size.
2. Set artwork guides
Bleed and safe margin are editable planning values. Confirm both with the print provider before supplying final artwork.

MEASURE THE OBJECT, NOT THE LABEL
Five measurements define the jacket
Measure the rigid case from head to tail. Decide whether your jacket should finish flush or slightly short, then enter that final height.
Measure the visible spine between its two folds while the book is closed. Include the shape of the manufactured case instead of estimating from page count.
Choose how much paper will turn inside each cover. Separate fields support unequal flaps when the available sheet or design requires it.
Before the full print
Print a narrow strip containing all four vertical folds at 100% scale, wrap it around the closed book and adjust the measured fold positions before paying for a full-color sheet.
How the dust jacket layout is calculated
1. Assemble the spread
The finished width is both flaps, both cover panels and the measured spine added in outside-reading order.
2. Add artwork boundaries
Bleed expands all four outside edges. Safe guides move important text and logos inward from cuts and folds.
3. Test the real sheet
The canvas is compared with the printer's usable area both as entered and rotated. Pixel dimensions use the selected DPI after converting physical size to inches.

There is no universal commercial dust-jacket template. Board overhang, hinges, spine construction, bleed and finishing tolerances vary by printer. This tool deliberately keeps those measurements editable.
Run these checks before printing the jacket
- Measure the actual closed book with a rigid ruler or caliper and repeat the spine measurement at the head and tail.
- Confirm that the artwork canvas, including bleed, fits inside the printer's usable area rather than only its advertised paper size.
- Place the back-flap copy on the far left and the front-flap copy on the far right when designing the outside spread.
- Keep titles, barcodes and important artwork away from trim and fold guides; curved spines may need a larger visual allowance.
- Disable Fit to page, Shrink oversized pages and automatic scaling when printing a physical-size guide.
- Use the print provider's downloadable template whenever the jacket is part of a commercial book order.
Dust jacket template questions
How wide is a complete dust jacket?
Add the back flap, back cover, spine, front cover and front flap. Bleed is then added outside that finished width, once at the left edge and once at the right edge.
Should I use the book's advertised trim size?
Not for a jacket fitted to an existing hardcover. Measure the rigid case because its boards normally extend beyond the text block and the finished spine may differ from a page-count estimate.
Can this template be imported into Canva?
Use the reported artwork canvas as the custom design size and add vertical guides at the four reported fold coordinates. The SVG can also be imported as a visible reference, but guide objects must not remain in final artwork.
Why does a 13 x 19 sheet sometimes fail?
The complete width includes two flaps as well as both covers and the spine. After bleed and printer margins, many standard hardcovers require a wider poster sheet or shorter flaps.
Does 300 DPI change the physical jacket size?
No. DPI only determines the pixel dimensions needed to represent the same physical canvas. The SVG retains physical width and height independently of raster DPI.
Is the exported SVG final print artwork?
No. It is a dimensioned guide with visible trim, fold, safe-area and panel labels. Use it as a layout layer, then hide or remove the guide before exporting production artwork.
