Match the calculator to the material

Mulch, soil, sod and decorative rock are purchased in different units. Volume calculators need finished depth, while sod tools use roll or pallet coverage; selecting the material first prevents misleading conversions.

How to plan a landscape material order

  1. 1
    Measure irregular beds in sections

Use rectangles or other simple shapes, then add the areas. Keep tree rings, paths and beds separate when depth or material changes.

  2. 2
    Use finished depth

Enter the layer depth after placement. Soil moisture, settling, product coverage and supplier rounding can make delivered volume different from the finished volume.

  3. 3
    Compare bags with bulk

Enter the bag volume and local prices when comparing retail bags with a bulk quote. Include delivery minimums and access in the final decision.

  4. 4
Do not treat the estimate as a planting plan

The calculators estimate material quantity and cost. Plant selection, drainage, soil testing and landscape design require separate decisions.

Landscape material calculator FAQ

How deep should mulch or soil be?

There is no single depth for every planting. Use the finished depth appropriate for the material and plants, and follow local extension or supplier guidance.

Is bulk material cheaper than bags?

It often is for larger areas, but delivery fees, minimum quantities, access and product coverage can change the comparison. Enter local values in the calculator.

How do I calculate soil for a raised bed?

Measure the inside length and width and the intended fill depth, then use the Raised Bed Soil Calculator. A raised-bed mix recipe is separate from the total volume.

Does a sod calculator include installation waste?

It can add the selected installation allowance, but curves, seams, cutting, pallet coverage and the supplier's minimum order still need a practical check.
