Mulch depth and coverage assumptions
Depth
A 2 to 4 inch finished layer is commonly used for landscape beds. Choose the depth recommended for the plantings and local conditions.
Bag conversion
This calculator divides the order volume by the stated bag volume. Bag sizes vary, so read the product label before buying.
Settling and delivery
Mulch can settle and delivered bulk volume may be rounded by the supplier. The allowance is editable and is not a substitute for a supplier quote.
Mulch calculator FAQ
How many cubic yards of mulch do I need?
Multiply the bed area by the finished depth, convert the volume to cubic yards, and add the selected allowance. Use separate measurements for irregular beds.
How deep should mulch be?
Many landscape recommendations use about 2 to 4 inches for beds, but the right depth depends on the planting and material. Do not pile mulch against trunks or stems.
How many bags of mulch are in a cubic yard?
At 2 cubic feet per bag, one cubic yard is 13.5 bags, so a practical order is 14 bags before any allowance. Check the actual bag volume.
Is bulk mulch cheaper than bags?
Bulk material often has a lower material price for larger areas, but delivery, minimum quantities and access can change the comparison.
Does this include landscape fabric or labor?
No. The estimate covers mulch quantity and the entered material prices. Fabric, edging, delivery, labor and taxes are separate.
