Calculation breakdown

  1. 1
    Area

    50 ft × 12 ft = 600 sq ft

  2. 2
    Compacted volume

    600 sq ft × 0.25 ft = 150 ft³

  3. 3
    Weight

    150 ft³ × 145 lb/ft³ ÷ 2,000 = 10.88 US tons

  4. 4
    Order quantity

    10.88 tons × 1.05 = 11.42 US tons

The calculator uses compacted in-place density. Do not add a separate compaction multiplier unless your supplier quotes loose material by volume.

Asphalt density and estimating assumptions

Density

The Asphalt Institute states that asphalt mixture typically weighs 142–148 lb/ft³ in place. This calculator starts at 145 lb/ft³ and keeps the value editable.

Thickness

Enter compacted thickness, not the uncompacted depth delivered from the truck. Required layer design depends on traffic, soil, base preparation and local specifications.

Allowance

The optional allowance covers estimating uncertainty rather than changing density. Ask the paving contractor or plant how they round minimum orders and partial loads.

Asphalt calculator FAQ

How do I calculate asphalt tonnage?

Multiply paved area by compacted thickness to find volume, multiply volume by compacted mix density, then divide pounds by 2,000 for US short tons. Add only the ordering allowance agreed with the supplier.

How much does one cubic yard of asphalt weigh?

At 145 lb/ft³, one cubic yard weighs about 3,915 lb or 1.96 US tons. Actual mix density can vary, so use the plant's value when available.

Should I use 2, 3 or 4 inches for a driveway?

The correct pavement structure depends on subgrade, base, climate, vehicles and local practice. Enter the compacted design thickness specified by the contractor or engineer; this calculator does not design the pavement.

Does the estimate include the gravel base?

No. Results cover only the asphalt layer. Base aggregate, excavation, tack coat, labor, equipment, delivery charges and taxes are separate.

Why can the supplier's tonnage differ?

Field dimensions, grade, density, lift thickness, waste, minimum orders and scale rounding can all change delivered quantity. Treat the result as a planning estimate and confirm the order with the asphalt plant or paving contractor.
