Estimate document thickness

Physical sheets × paper caliper, plus covers and extra inserts, gives the estimated stack. Direct measurement overrides the estimate.

Select the first standard size that fits

The calculator uses the recommended maximum book thickness table from the James Burn WOB3500 manual and chooses the smallest compatible element in the requested pitch.

Calculate loops and margins

Pitch is converted to loop spacing. The usable binding edge is divided into whole intervals, then the remaining space is centered at both ends.

What Wire-O size fits a 6 mm document?

The James Burn table recommends a 5/16 inch (7.9 mm) 3:1 element for a book block up to 6.2 mm. Confirm with a finished sample and your machine.

When does Wire-O change from 3:1 to 2:1 pitch?

The referenced chart uses 3:1 through 9/16 inch and 2:1 from 5/8 inch upward. Your punch and closer must support that pitch.

Should I enter pages or sheets?

Enter printed pages and choose duplex or single-sided. The calculator converts pages to physical sheets before applying paper caliper.

Why should I measure the finished stack?

Paper caliper, toner, coating, lamination, tabs and covers all affect thickness. A complete sample is more reliable than a generic sheets-per-millimeter assumption.
