Record the setup
Write down the product, spreader model, gate setting, pass spacing, walking speed and weather conditions.
MEASURED TEST-STRIP CALIBRATION
Use the fertilizer consumed over a measured test strip to calculate the actual application rate, compare it with your target, and plan a repeatable second pass.
This tool checks measured application rate. It does not select a fertilizer, diagnose soil, or override label limits, nutrient-management plans or local rules.
TEST-STRIP MEASUREMENTS
Suggested product rate: 5.00 lb/1,000 ft2
For a rotary spreader, use effective pass spacing after overlap, not the farthest granule throw. Keep product, setting and walking speed consistent during each test.

Flow may not change linearly with the spreader opening.
It is a starting point. Product density, granule shape, equipment condition, walking speed and pass spacing can change the measured rate, so a weighed test strip provides a stronger check.
It is the planned distance between passes after accounting for overlap. For a drop spreader it is close to hopper width; for a rotary spreader it is usually narrower than the total throw.
This page labels results within 5% as on target and within 10% as close, but the product label, equipment guidance and local requirements control the acceptable application.
