Best decimal unit
Best binary unit
GB to GiB gap
Rule of thumbStorage vendors usually use decimal units; operating systems and memory tools may report binary units.

Data storage conversion formulas

1 byte = 8 bitsUse this relationship to convert between bit-based and byte-based sizes.
1 KB = 1000 bytesDecimal SI storage unit, commonly used for drives, files and network rates.
1 KiB = 1024 bytesBinary IEC storage unit, commonly used for memory and operating-system file sizes.
GiB = bytes / 1024^3Divide bytes by 1,073,741,824 to calculate gibibytes.

Common storage examples

Drive capacity500 GB is about 465.661 GiB, explaining why operating-system capacity can look smaller.
Memory size16 GiB is about 17.18 GB in decimal storage units.
File download700 MB is about 667.572 MiB.
Bit to byte80 megabits equals 10 megabytes because one byte contains eight bits.

Data storage converter FAQ

How many bits are in a byte?

One byte equals eight bits.

What is the difference between KB and KiB?

KB is decimal and equals 1,000 bytes. KiB is binary and equals 1,024 bytes.

Why does a 500 GB drive show about 465 GiB?

Drive labels usually use decimal GB, while many operating systems report binary GiB. Both values describe the same byte count.

Are MB and Mb the same?

No. MB means megabytes and Mb means megabits. Eight megabits equal one megabyte.
